Anal glands are small internal glands on either side of your dog’s anus. The purpose of the glands are to provide lubrication during a bowel movement. In some cases, the glands are not expressed normally with a bowel movement, there can be many reasons for this. If an anal gland becomes blocked or impacted, this will be painful for your dog and will require veterinary attention.
Should I drain my dog’s anal glands at home?
Expressing anal glands can be a very unpleasant and invasive experience, and we recommend the procedure is done by a registered veterinary technician or veterinarian. If you’re comfortable handling this procedure at home, our veterinary team can give you a lesson on proper techniques.
If my dog scoots on the carpet a lot, does this mean their anal glands are impacted?
Scooting can be a symptom of anal gland issues. If you are noticing this behaviour, it is time to book an appointment.
