At the Morinville Veterinary Clinic, we like to see our pets age gracefully. Every pet deserves to live a long, healthy and happy life. As our pets age, their needs change and adjustments to their lifestyle will change accordingly.
When does a dog become a senior?
Typically, our companion animals are considered to be seniors by the age of 7 or 8, depending on size. Larger dog breeds tend to have a shorter life span and are considered seniors earlier in life.
What are common senior dog health issues?
Ageing is inevitable, common health issue among seniors may include orthopedic problems such as arthritis. Other common issues include heart disease, cancer, dental disease, high blood pressure, renal/liver disease. Senior pets may experience senility, loss of sight or hearing and decreased energy.
How should I care for my senior dog? (schedule regular checkup, exercise etc.)
Senior pets require more comprehensive veterinary care. We recommend senior pets see the veterinarian at least every six months. Ideally, we would like to screen your pet’s blood and urine to detect disease. Routine screening will help us to detect the disease early, therefore, making treatment easier and more effective. Senior pets should also be on a diet tailored to their needs. Exercise is important, however, the frequency or duration of exercise may decrease to avoid injury or strain.
